GRAS Innovation Award 2025 – Game-Changer Winner

RWTH Aachen University, Germany

A High-Resolution Head-Related Transfer Function Data Set and 3D-Scan of KEMAR
By Hark Braren and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Janina Fels, Institute and Chair for Hearing Technology and Acoustics, RWTH Aachen University

The team at RWTH Aachen University has delivered a groundbreaking contribution to spatial-audio science with the project “A High-Resolution Head-Related Transfer Function Data Set and 3D-Scan of KEMAR.” Their goal was to push the boundaries of how precisely human spatial hearing can be measured, modelled, and reproduced.

Using a GRAS 45BB-4 KEMAR Head and Torso Simulator fitted with GRAS 40AO ½″ pre-polarized microphones and GRAS 26CS CCP preamplifiers, powered through GRAS 12AL CCP modules, the researchers carried out more than 43 000 directional measurements with 1°×1° spatial resolution. Each microphone was calibrated with a GRAS 42AA piston

Shaping the Future of Sound
