Announcing the Winners of the GRAS Innovation Award 2025!
Celebrating the Brightest Minds in Acoustics
Each year, GRAS Sound & Vibration honors the brightest minds in acoustics and sound measurement through the GRAS Innovation Award — recognizing projects that push the boundaries of what’s possible in sound research, technology, and real-world application.
After careful evaluation by our international jury panel, we are proud to announce the winners of the GRAS Innovation Award 2025.
GRAS Award - The Innovation in Research 2025
Winner: Brigham Young University, USA
Authors: Dr. Kent L. Gee
Project: Revolutionizing Rocket Noise Research: GRAS Microphones Deliver Precision and Reliability
Through groundbreaking work on NASA’s Space Launch System and SpaceX Starship programs, Dr. Gee demonstrated how GRAS microphones can capture and characterize the world’s most extreme acoustic environments — from shock-induced crackle to supersonic booms. This study redefines precision acoustics in aerospace.
GRAS Award - The Game-Changer 2025
Winner: RWTH Aachen University, Germany
Authors: Hark Braren and Janina Fels
Project: A High-Resolution Head-Related Transfer Function Data Set and 3D-Scan of KEMAR
The RWTH team created an open, high-resolution HRTF dataset using the GRAS KEMAR Head and Torso Simulator — bridging physical measurement and acoustic simulation. Their work sets a new benchmark for spatial audio realism and paves the way for future breakthroughs in 3D sound and headphone design.
GRAS Award – The Architectural Innovation 2025
Winner: Universidad Nacional de Tres de Febrero (UNTREF), Argentina
Authors: Carro Morais Sebastián, Gómez Federico, Igoldi Rizzi Jerónimo, and Mellino Simón
Project: Acoustic Characterization of the Usina del Arte Main Concert Hall
Using the GRAS KEMAR system, UNTREF captured the concert hall’s acoustics as experienced by human listeners. Their research connects objective measurement with subjective perception, advancing architectural acoustics through precision, creativity, and cultural heritage.
GRAS Award – The Industrial Application 2025
Winner: East China University of Science and Technology (ECUST), China
Authors: Jilai Cao, Sibo Huang, Xinhai Yu, and Yong Li
Project: Acoustic Attenuation of Side-Branched Helmholtz Resonator with Embedded Apertures in Grazing Flow Ducts
By combining advanced computational modeling with GRAS precision microphones, ECUST achieved new insight into industrial noise control under high-speed aerodynamic flow — contributing directly to quieter and more efficient acoustic systems worldwide.
